Recovering from emergencies

Dealing with an emergency can be stressful and exhausting. Recovering from a disaster is a complex process that may take months, even years to overcome.

Red Cross is committed to supporting people on their disaster journey. We talk with people in emergency-affected communities to identify gaps in support and our volunteers work with communities in the days, months and sometimes years after an emergency.

Disaster recovery: how we help

Red Cross volunteers work in recovery centres, visit homes, attend events and support community activities to provide both practical and emotional support and information. We also provide referrals to emergency and disaster recovery services. We assist with community recovery by helping communities understand and plan their recovery process and advise governments and agencies on good practice in recovery.
