Food security

Food security is a human right and exists when all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious, culturally appropriate food to maintain a healthy and active life.

In many areas throughout Australia there are people who run out of food and the means to purchase food regularly. Daily, too many people face barriers to accessing enough healthy food.

What Red Cross does

Red Cross is working with communities to address the three pillars of food security:

  • food availability 
  • food access 
  • food utilisation. 

Red Cross works with many communities and organisations across the country in providing programs to address the three pillars of food security. 

Red Cross programs span the spectrum from food relief to working with communities to find their own solutions, ensuring access to healthy food.

People of all ages are assisted with access to healthy food through programs including Good Start Breakfast Clubs, community gardens, Meals on Wheels and Soup Patrol. Healthy eating education sessions, which aim to improve food budgeting and cooking skills, are run around the country.

Red Cross also runs a range of initiatives to improve access to adequate healthy food, such as local analysis of food availability as well as school and community gardens.

Partners with communities

Red Cross works with communities, governments and networks with other partners to promote better access to healthy food. Red Cross is committed to focusing its work on addressing the underlying issues that contribute to food insecurity.

The largest barriers to community food security are systemic and structural issues such as inadequate access to appropriate housing and income, which are beyond the means for Red Cross to directly control.

There is increasing focus on advocacy targeted at key decision makers to make it easier for people to access enough good food.
