Our organisation

Who we are and how we work

Our vision

Human dignity, peace, safety and wellbeing for all.

Our purpose

We support and empower people and communities in times of vulnerability. Our purpose is to reduce suffering across Australia and internationally through mobilising the power of humanity.

Mobilising the power of humanity

Every act in this annual report was made possible by our incredible Red Cross people, in partnership and collaboration with academics, businesses, institutions and communities.

Members

Our 11,000 members are the grass-roots of Red Cross, on the ground in communities around Australia. From raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to support Red Cross programs, to running programs responding to the issues they see around them and taking action to solve them.

Volunteers

Our 18,000 volunteers are the human face of the services we provide. Not only do they provide their time, but by saying: ‘I’m here because I care, not because I’m being paid’, they fundamentally change the nature of the services we provide. They ensure the people we support know they are valued and cared about.

Staff

Our 2,000 staff members guide our work and provide our services, ensure we are accountable and provide Australians with ways to engage with and support us.

Donors

We are thrilled to have the support of 749,266 people who made single or regular donations this year. The generous contribution of these Australians played a vital role in helping us build stronger and more resilient communities.

Compliance

We focus on best practice in all our policy and regulatory compliance.

Fundraising industry compliance

As a member of the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA), we are bound by – and act in accordance with – its Principles and Standards of Fundraising Practice. We actively participate in special interest groups, including the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PRFA) and the FIA Sustainability Task Force.

Australian Council for International Development (ACFID)

We are a member of the Australian Council for International Development and are committed to full adherence to its Code of Conduct for Non-Government Organisations, which sets minimum standards of governance, management and accountability. Red Cross is committed to the Code’s complaints handling process. Adherence to the Code is monitored by an independent Code of Conduct committee.

Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC)

Red Cross is registered with the independent national regulator of charities, the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, under ABN 50169561394.

Legislative compliance

Red Cross is committed to complying with all relevant state, territory and federal laws, as well as working ethically and achieving best practice. The Legal & Policy Unit supports this by providing comprehensive legal advice and support to the Board, the CEO, senior management and Red Cross staff.
