Victorians urged to be kind to themselves and others during lockdown

12 February 2021

Australian Red Cross is urging those affected by Victoria’s latest lockdown to take care of one another over the coming days.

While the last lockdown may remain fresh in the memories of many people, it is important to remember some basic tips to cope with the new restrictions.

Australian Red Cross Victorian Director Sue Cunningham said:

“The coming days will be very difficult for a lot of people, particularly those who found previous lockdowns quite challenging. It’s absolutely normal to experience anxiety and frustration with another round of restrictions, but reminding ourselves that staying home will stop the spread of this virus puts it in perspective

"Control should be a major focus: what is it that you can do to feel in control? It’s a time to think about things you enjoy doing, whether it’s putting together a Lego set with your kids, reading a novel you’ve been waiting to read or cooking a meal you’ve always wanted to eat.

“People should try to reduce the amount of stress they have. This is not a time to boost your productivity and begin major personal projects that are on your to-do list. Be kind to yourself, and to others.

“If you are feeling isolated and vulnerable, it is important you reach out and talk to someone about it, as those feelings can escalate quickly.”

Victorians can ring the COVID Hotline on 1800 675 398 if they’re feeling isolated or need help to access practical support.

Australian Red Cross in Victoria is also making changes to ensure it can continue to deliver programs and support, in a COVID-safe manner, during the lockdown.

Some programs and services usually carried out face-to-face will be done remotely. Meanwhile, capacity for our COVID-response programs is being ramped up.

These programs include emergency food relief coordination and the Community Activation and Social Initiative, which sees trained Red Cross members provide phone-based support to Victorians, in partnership with the Victorian Government. We are also continuing to provide emergency financial relief payments to people on temporary visas experiencing extreme financial hardship
