Australians urged to prepare now ahead of extreme heatwave conditions sweeping the nation

6 January 2026

Australian Red Cross is urging Australians to take action and make a plan with severe heatwave conditions expected to grip much of the country this week.

With temperatures forecast to soar above 30°C across all states and territories, with some regions expected to reach temperatures above 40°C, now is the time to get prepared.

Australian Red Cross Director of Recovery and Resilience, Nichola Krey said heatwaves are not just another hot day.

“Extreme heat can be extremely dangerous, and it's vital that people have a plan to keep cool, especially those who are vulnerable, older or unwell,” Ms Krey said.

“When temperatures rise, simple steps like keeping hydrated, staying indoors and wearing light clothing can make a significant difference. We also encourage everyone to check in on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours - make sure they have enough groceries and any essential medications, so they don’t need to head outside for supplies during extreme conditions.”

“Australian Red Cross offers a number of useful heatwave resources on its website which detail what people can do to stay cool in the lead up and during a heatwave.”

Key steps people can take to prepare for a heatwave

Get in the know: Visit redcross.org.au/extremeheat and gain tips for developing a heatwave preparedness plan.

  • For those with specific health conditions, speak to your GP about how hot weather may affect you.
  • Download the Bureau of Meteorology app for reliable weather forecasts and warnings.

Get organised: Plan ahead to make sure you have enough supplies, such as food, water and any medication required – including having a plan for any pets or animals during a heat event.

Get packing: Consider what essentials you may need to keep yourself and your space cool including water, fans, spray bottles – as well as a cooler bag for any food or medication that might be impacted during a power outage.

Get connected: Build support networks with neighbours, family, and friends, plan for heatwave safety together. Plan who you may need to check in on during a heat event.

Building on the success of Australia’s inaugural Extreme Heat Awareness Day in 2025, Australian Red Cross, in collaboration with Sweltering Cities and partners nationwide, will deliver the second annual Extreme Heat Awareness Day on 4 February 2026. This day aims to raise national awareness about the escalating threat of extreme heat and empower communities to prepare, adapt, and stay safe as temperatures rise.
