Australian Red Cross and NRMA Insurance get communities ready with Get Prepared app

20 June 2023

Australian Red Cross has partnered with NRMA Insurance to help communities prepare for disasters with an app which is simple to complete and relevant for all kinds of emergencies.

The Get Prepared app is a vital emergency plan companion which allows users to digitally complete an Australian Red Cross RediPlan – an all-hazards emergency plan.

Australian Red Cross Head of Emergency Services, Andrew Coghlan, said RediPlan takes an all-hazards and psychosocial approach to preparing for emergencies, with easy-to-follow instructions.

“Being prepared means you can look after yourself, your loved ones and what’s important to you,” he said.

“Emergencies can occur anywhere, at any time and when they happen, there’s lots of decisions to make. Last year alone, Australian Red Cross supported more than 130,000 people during emergencies such as bushfires, floods and severe storms.

“We see firsthand the benefits of creating a RediPlan on the Get Prepared app, which not only helps your household better prepare to respond to the physical impacts of emergencies, but also better prepare mentally.”

NRMA Insurance Executive Manager Claims, Natalie Major, encouraged everyone to use the app to plan how they would respond and recover in an emergency.

“The Get Prepared app is a digital version of the Red Cross RediPlan, making it easier for Aussies to create an emergency plan,” Ms Major said.

“The app ensures that you have all the information you need such as key contacts, meeting places and important documents on-hand and easily accessible. It also prompts people to consider how they would manage stress during and after an emergency.

“We’re urging people to take three steps to prepare for wild weather this winter; make an emergency plan using the Get Prepared app, share your contact details with your neighbours and discuss your emergency plan with your household.”

The advice comes as a warmer and drier than average winter is forecast, leading into a potentially dangerous bushfire season.

Australian Red Cross has been responding to emergencies and providing humanitarian assistance in Australia since 1914.

It is seeking volunteers to support its emergency services teams to uplift capability and support communities before, during and after disasters.
