Common questions

Over ¾ of our income is spent on services in Australia in cities, regional towns and remote communities all over the country. We have offices and staff working in 181 locations around the country, and hundreds of branches representing and supporting Red Cross. We pride ourselves on having a geographically diverse network which allows us to reach people and provide support. If there is no Red Cross presence in your community we encourage you to look into ways to address issues your community may be facing and seek support from others to either start your own Red Cross Branch or simply take action and use our resources to help you.

Red Cross does not provide financial or accomodation assistance. We would recommend you get in touch with Centrelink on 132 468. To find out more about what services we do provide, visit Get Help or contact your local Red Cross office.

Red Cross does not assist with visa applications. We do provide a range of other assistance to asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants. Visit Help for migrants in transition to learn more.

We provide a variety of services that vary depending on where you live. We do everything from helping people during disasters, to supporting isolated, older people who live alone to helping people seeking asylum - and so much more. Take a look at the list of who we help and how at Get Help.

Legitimate Red Cross fundraisers always wear a red t-shirt or a red spray jacket with the Red Cross logo.

They will have a badge with their name, photo and ID number, and carry up-to-date Red Cross brochures, etc.

They tend to go door knocking or stand at stalls branded with the Red Cross logo in prominent locations and only ask for regular donations to be paid through a bank direct debit or a credit card - not cash.

The only exception is in March when we hold our annual fundraising campaign, Red Cross Calling. During March registered collectors can accept one-off cash donations and issue receipts. Red Cross members will also at times throughout the year collect cash donations at shopping centres, events etc. and often wear a Red Cross name badge and have Red Cross branded materials.

If you are concerned about the legitimacy of a fundraiser, contact the Customer Care team. Email contactus@redcross.org.au or phone 1800 RED CROSS.

You can directly make a donation with a credit card here on our website or by contacting the Customer Care team on 1800 RED CROSS.

Cheque, credit card and money order donations can be posted to Customer Care Centre, GPO Box 2957, Melbourne, VIC 3001.

We have made a significant reduction in the amount of printed material we produce and send out, reducing both our carbon footprint and costs. For example, our Annual Report is now published online instead of in print and we have ceased sending our national newsletter in print and send it via email only. There are, however, times when printed material is useful and helps us to reach people and gain more support. For example, when we post information to our donors we see a much higher rate of people making a donation compared to emails. Printed materials can also be useful to let potential clients learn about our services.
