Our strategy

Building resilient communities through the power of humanity.

Stronger connections start with people

From disasters and rising costs to social isolation and uncertainty, communities across Australia are being asked to navigate more with less.

Our strategy addresses the everchanging humanitarian landscape, focusing on bringing people together and strengthening community resilience. By combining our expertise and insights with the strengths of communities and partners, we can create greater impact where it's needed most.

The change we’re working towards

Focusing where we can make the biggest difference

People are at the heart of every resilient community.

When people feel connected, informed, and supported, they're better able to adapt to change, overcome challenges, and support one another through difficult times.

To create the greatest impact, we're focusing our efforts where they're needed most. This includes supporting people and communities who:

  • are affected by disasters, crises, and disruption
  • are at risk of harm, exploitation, or vulnerability
  • experience loneliness, isolation, or disconnection

Turning strategy into action

Our strategy brings our collective efforts together across three interconnected impact portfolios

Social connection and cohesion

Strengthens relationships, participation, sense of being and networks that help people feel connected and communities stay strong through times of uncertainty, enabling communities to act together.

Risk reduction

Helps communities anticipate and understand risks, reduce vulnerability, strengthen preparedness and build their capacity to adapt to changing conditions. Building greater resilience means they will be better able to anticipate and prepare for disruptions.

Relief and recovery from disruption

Supports communities to navigate disruption, recover, adapt and respond to changing conditions.

Creating impact that lasts

While each Impact Portfolio has a distinct role, resilience is created through their combined impact. Our programs, services and initiatives often span multiple portfolios, working together to create meaningful outcomes for communities. Grounded in our Fundamental Principles, this strategy provides a clear framework for how we create lasting impact.

As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, Australian Red Cross works alongside National Societies across our region to address many of these same challenges. Together, we support communities facing conflict and displacement, help families separated by crisis reconnect through Restoring Family Links, promote respect for international humanitarian law, and strengthen preparedness and resilience before crises occur.

While responding to emergencies remains central to our humanitarian mission, we know resilience is built long before a crisis occurs. Communities need the connections, capabilities, and support to prepare, adapt, and recover.

We can’t do it alone

No single organisation can solve today’s complex challenges alone. That is why partnership is central to our approach.

At Australian Red Cross, we work alongside communities, governments, businesses, researchers and humanitarian partners to turn shared purpose into meaningful action. Together, we strengthen the networks, systems and relationships that help communities thrive.

We work at every level, from directly supporting individuals and communities to influencing the policies, systems and partnerships that create lasting change.

With your support focused on key strategic priorities, we can build stronger connections, stronger communities and greater resilience before, during and after disruption.

Australian Red Cross acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this land, their ancestors and Elders, past and present.
