From 27 August 2026, all donations to the Australian Red Cross Global Emergency Fund will support the Red Cross response to devastating flash floods in northern Nepal.
On 26 August 2026, a glacial lake outburst flood near the Tibet border triggered severe flash flooding across northern Nepal. Communities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts experienced widespread destruction as floodwaters damaged homes, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure. Some communities remain cut off, making it difficult for responders to access affected areas and assess the full extent of humanitarian needs.
Reports indicate that at least 160 people have lost lives, while hundreds remain missing including Australians, as the full scale of the disaster continues to emerge.
Nepal Red Cross Society has mobilised Emergency Response Teams and volunteers to support emergency assessments and relief operations. Additional teams are being deployed to assist local branches with limited response capacity due to the disaster.
Emergency assistance is already underway. To date, Nepal Red Cross Society has dispatched tarpaulins, blankets, sleeping mats and body bags, alongside first aid kits, stretchers and drinking water supplies where access permits. Immediate priorities include providing emergency shelter, safe drinking water, basic relief items, first aid and health support, and reaching isolated communities cut off by the floods. Government authorities, emergency services, medical teams and Nepal Red Cross Society are supporting ongoing search, rescue and response efforts.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has released emergency funding to support the response and is working alongside the Nepal Red Cross Society to coordinate relief efforts and assess evolving needs.
Your donation helps Red Cross to support people affected by the floods in Nepal. It enables Red Cross staff and volunteers to provide life-saving assistance and help people recover safely and with dignity. That support may include:
Australian Red Cross is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement partners, with readiness to provide support as required.
Looking for a loved one? Australian Red Cross can help people in Australia seeking to contact or locate family members affected by the floods through our Restoring Family Links service. Contact tracing@redcross.org.au or call 1800 875 199.

Donations to the Global Emergency Fund mean Red Cross can be there for people in disasters, crises and conflicts overseas. It powers local emergency teams to provide life-saving assistance during disasters and conflict, and helps communities recover with dignity and prepare for future crises.
Your donations support life-changing work, and may include:
Our local emergency teams are experts in their field and based in communities. Many of them have lived through emergencies themselves. With your support, we can continue making sure that Australian Red Cross can show solidarity and provide additional support, helping people through the most challenging moments of their lives.
At least 80 per cent of money raised goes directly to the purposes of this fund. No more than 20 cents in every dollar is spent on support costs so we can run Australian Red Cross efficiently and effectively.
These support costs include investments associated with the overall operational capacity of Australian Red Cross, such as:
Yes, all donations to Australian Red Cross are tax-deductible in Australia. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider.
You will receive a receipt in your name.
In the unlikely event that the funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the emergency needs of people in affected areas, or if there are circumstances beyond the control of Australian Red Cross, excess funds will be directed to our work in international crises and disasters.

We really appreciate the generosity, but we are not accepting in-kind donations for food, clothes, medical equipment or other items, as we’re unable to distribute those overseas. There are several good reasons for this. Every item has to be checked, cleaned, sorted, packed, transported, stored and distributed, which hugely increases the cost of the relief effort and diverts from work that may be needed on the ground.
Also, the items donated aren’t always what people need. But cash helps people make dignified choices that are right for them. Even worse, unwanted boxes of donated goods can clog ports and post offices and actually prevent the delivery of essential items like medicines and relief supplies.
Read more about what might happen when goods are donated after an emergency: Donating clothes or goods after an emergency.
If you have good-quality clothes or household items, our Red Cross Shops would gratefully accept them, to on-sell in Australia and raise funds for our vital work. Find out how you can donate.
