First Aid course requirements

What you need to know before you enrol.

Language, literacy, & numeracy requirements

This course is delivered in English language - you’ll need basic English speaking and listening skills, and to be able to understand and use simple numbers. This includes the ability to:

  • Read and understand workplace documents such as safety signs, instructions, and reports.
  • Write clearly and effectively, including short responses.
  • Complete basic mathematical tasks, such as count to at least 30 to perform CPR, or reading expiry dates.
  • Understand spoken instructions and record verbal information.

Digital literacy requirements

Assessments are completed electronically through an “aXcelerate Learner Portal” account which is setup after enrolment. You will need basic skills in using a computer, iPad, or smartphone as well as using email and other applications to complete this training.

If you are enrolling in one of our virtual courses, you will also need the ability to access and use “Zoom” or Microsoft Teams. You will also be taught to use an electronic device called an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Physical requirements

First aid courses are competency-based training. Students are assessed using a range of methodologies including observations, questioning, and role play/simulation activities. It is likely that you will be paired with others during certain activities.

First aid contains practical activities which can be physically demanding in nature. In particular, students are required to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted, single-rescuer CPR on a manikin placed on the floor. The requirement for the manikin to be placed on the floor cannot be adjusted.

Participation requirements

Students are expected to participate in line with our Student Code of Conduct (available in the Student Handbook) at all times.

First aid training is a combination of knowledge requirements and performance requirements.

To be assessed as competent, students need to take part in all knowledge and practical activities. While we support every learner, competency is only awarded when all requirements are met.

Available support

First aid courses contain content about emergency situations, which may be distressing. Content contains information about wellbeing for first aiders, including available support services, and we take a flexible delivery approach, allowing for wellbeing breaks wherever possible. Specific training supports are also available, including:

  • Trainer call-back service for assistance with content (business hours)
  • Customer service call centre
  • Support feature in the Learner Portal
  • Email reminders for assessment completion and credential expiry
  • Built-in accessibility features in our digital platforms
  • Feedback, complaints and appeals processes
