After bushfires destroyed her home on Kangaroo Island, Sabrina experienced this firsthand. In the immediate aftermath, Australian Red Cross provided practical support through emergency relief centres – offering essential care packs, helping people reconnect with loved ones, and connecting them with financial and longer-term assistance.
But recovery doesn’t end there. In Sabrina’s community, a local Australian Red Cross Disaster Recovery Officer worked alongside residents for four and a half years – providing consistent, on-the-ground support to help people navigate recovery and rebuild in ways that worked for them.
Without sustained support, recovery becomes harder. Emotional distress deepens, financial instability increases, and communities are less prepared for future disasters. It’s the phase that often goes underfunded – yet it determines long-term outcomes for communities.
Today, Sabrina works with Australian Red Cross – providing the same kind of support she once relied on, and helping communities prepare for what comes next.
More people need this support than ever before. Between August 2025 and March 2026, Australian Red Cross supported 43,838 people, with volunteers activated for 238 days across 23 disasters nationwide – spending five times more hours on the ground than at the same time last year.
Your EOFY donation can help fund this critical stage of recovery.

“Australian Red Cross can make an incredible difference to communities because people recognise who we are and what we do. As soon as people see the red shirt, there’s a feeling of understanding that we are there to assist that community and individuals in whatever way we can. We can just walk right in and get on with the job.”
- Jessica, Australian Red Cross disaster recovery volunteer

“We hugged. We cried. We just looked at each other and thought, ‘how are we going to get through this?’ Then someone from Australian Red Cross walked over, introduced herself, and sat with us. She didn’t rush us. She didn’t tell us to be strong. She understood.”
- Lee, bushfire survivor, Victoria

“To all the precious souls who comprise Red Cross, I wholeheartedly extend my sincerest praise and deepest gratitude for the support you provide to those in genuine need. God bless you all. In the finest of ways, you personify your motto, ‘The Power of Humanity.’”

Yes, donations of gifts over $2 are tax deductible in Australia. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider.
You will receive a receipt in your name.
Your donation will help Australian Red Cross support people facing vulnerability in communities in Australia and across the world. Your gift will go to help wherever the needs are greatest. That could be:
Here are some of the great things supporters like you made possible in the 2024/2025 financial year:
If you donate a gift to an organisation classified as a ‘deductible gift recipient’ (like Australian Red Cross), you can claim a tax deduction on your tax return for that year for your donation. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider. Donating to a deductible gift recipient will likely reduce your overall taxable income, which in turn may reduce the amount of tax you are required to pay.
You must donate at least $2 and keep proof in the form of a receipt or bank statement. When you donate to Australian Red Cross, we’ll send you a tax receipt. The more you donate, the more you may claim back. Find out more
You will still get a receipt for tax purposes – and we’ll be hugely grateful to you. However, any donations received over the phone, online, or in the mail (post-marked) after midnight on 30 June 2026, can’t be claimed for tax purposes until the start of the following financial year.
We would love to help you answer any questions. Please call 1800 733 276 or email contactus@redcross.org.au. For security reasons, don't include your credit card details in your email.
