From survivor to helping others recover

Six years ago, Sabrina’s life was turned upside down when bushfires tore through Kangaroo Island, destroying her family’s home and property. Evacuating with her children and dogs, unsure if her husband would survive, she was left in shock and uncertainty.

At the emergency relief centre, many others had also escaped. “Many of the women that had escaped with their children probably assumed that they were going to be widows the next day, me included,” she says.

Full of fear and unsure what to expect, she walked inside. “When I saw Australian Red Cross, I instantly felt safe,” she recalls. In the years that followed, that sense of support continued, with a local recovery officer working alongside the community as it began to rebuild and move forward.

As Sabrina navigated her recovery, she supported others, organising fundraisers and opening up conversations around mental health. “I wanted to make sure that what I had been through wasn’t useless,” she says.

Today, Sabrina works in a resilience-focused role at Australian Red Cross, helping communities prepare for emergencies before they happen—coming full circle from receiving support to providing it.

“It can happen to anyone, any day,” she says. “Being prepared saves lives.”

Your kindness is needed now

You can help someone rebuild their world.

About your donation to Red Cross

Yes, donations of gifts over $2 are tax deductible in Australia. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider.

You will receive a receipt in your name.

Your donation will help Australian Red Cross support people facing vulnerability in communities in Australia and across the world. Your gift will go to help wherever the needs are greatest. That could be:

  • emotional and practical support to someone affected by a disaster
  • emergency financial aid for a family who fled conflict overseas and is starting over
  • companionship for older people who are isolated and alone
  • and so much more.

Here are some of the great things supporters like you made possible in the 2024/2025 financial year:

  • Support for 281,923 people before, during and after disasters.
  • 139,168 hours of volunteers connecting with older and vulnerable people through our Telecross and Telechat programs.
  • Much-needed support for more than 34,000 people from 129 countries through our migration support programs in Australia.
  • 57 Australian international aid workers were deployed to help in 25 countries.

If you donate a gift to an organisation classified as a ‘deductible gift recipient’ (like Australian Red Cross), you can claim a tax deduction on your tax return for that year for your donation. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider. Donating to a deductible gift recipient will likely reduce your overall taxable income, which in turn may reduce the amount of tax you are required to pay.

You must donate at least $2 and keep proof in the form of a receipt or bank statement. When you donate to Australian Red Cross, we’ll send you a tax receipt. The more you donate, the more you may claim back. Find out more

You will still get a receipt for tax purposes – and we’ll be hugely grateful to you. However, any donations received over the phone, online, or in the mail (post-marked) after midnight on 30 June 2026, can’t be claimed for tax purposes until the start of the following financial year.

We would love to help you answer any questions. Please call 1800 733 276 or email contactus@redcross.org.au. For security reasons, don't include your credit card details in your email.
