Your support has brought joy back to Brian’s world

When Brian, 94, moved into an aged care home to be with his wife Judy, who has advanced dementia, he never expected how lonely it would feel.

The silence, the long days, the missing conversations.

“I miss talking to people,” says Brian. “I made my living by talking.”

Brian is a former schoolteacher and principal - articulate, intelligent and a born communicator. Sadly, Judy can’t talk much anymore. Brian can sit with her and hold her hand, and he’s happy to do it, but it gets lonely.

Brian’s story isn’t unusual. One in five older people living in Australia are socially isolated, and in aged care, that rises to one in three.

Thousands will spend this festive season alone, without a single visitor. They feel like they’re not valued, not important.

That’s not OK. Not at any time of year, and especially not during the festive season.

But for Brian and Judy, something changed. Australian Red Cross volunteers Yuly and Willy started visiting. They brought stories, laughter and music, and reminded them that they still matter, that they’re still part of the world.

Moments like these might sound simple – a chat, a laugh, memories shared – but for someone who feels forgotten, they can change everything.

“You can’t believe how much it means to me. It makes all the difference in the world,” says Brian.

Your festive gift can help bring that same joy and connection to others, here in Australia and around the world.

“You can’t believe how much it means to me.” – Brian, who receives a regular visit from an Australian Red Cross volunteer.

About your donation to Australian Red Cross

Yes, donations of gifts over $2 are tax deductible in Australia. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider.

You will receive a receipt in your name.

Your donation will help Australian Red Cross support the most vulnerable people in our local communities in Australia and across the Asia Pacific. Your gift will go to help wherever the needs are greatest. That could be:

  • companionship for older people who are isolated and alone
  • emotional and practical support to someone affected by a disaster
  • emergency financial aid for a family who fled conflict overseas and is starting over
  • and so much more.

Every year, in Australia, we help someone every 90 seconds. Here are some of the great things supporters like you made possible last financial year:

  • support for more than 324,000 people during and after disasters in Australia
  •  regular phone calls or visits to more than 3,500 older isolated people
  • much-needed support for more than 19,700 people from 125 countries who had been made vulnerable by migration and are now living in Australia
  • 66 Australian international aid workers were deployed to help in 33 countries.

If you donate a gift to an organisation classified as a ‘deductible gift recipient’ (like Australian Red Cross), you can claim a tax deduction on your tax return for that year for your donation. If you receive a material benefit for your donation then it is not tax deductible: for example, if you receive points or another material benefit from your credit card provider. Donating to a deductible gift recipient will likely reduce your overall taxable income, which in turn may reduce the amount of tax you are required to pay.

You must donate at least $2 and keep proof in the form of a receipt or bank statement. When you donate to Australian Red Cross, we’ll send you a tax receipt. The more you donate, the more you may claim back. Find out more »

Every day, people like you are helping to make a real difference in the lives of those who are vulnerable through our regular giving program.

Our regular givers support our work by automatically donating every four weeks, either by credit card or direct debit. Their ongoing support means we can be there for people facing crisis in Australia and beyond for years to come.

We would love to help you answer any questions. Please call 1800 733 276 or email contactus@redcross.org.au. For security reasons, don't include your credit card details in your email.
