Loneliness is something we can all experience from time to time, but many may not realise just how much ongoing loneliness can impact their mental and physical wellbeing. For older people, this burden can be especially heavy. Major life changes like retiring from work, losing a spouse or close friends, moving into residential care, and facing declining health can leave people feeling isolated and disconnected.
This is where Australian Red Cross aged care services can step in to help. Through companionship and social support, transport services, and delivered meals we’re making sure older people receive essential nutrition and maintain social connections, which are so vital for their wellbeing. Generous regular donations from people like you help make programs like this possible.
The impact of these connections becomes clear in stories like that of Beth and Lexie, who found each other through our Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme. Despite the 74-year age gap—Beth is 93 and Lexie 19—they’ve formed a friendship that has enriched both of their lives in ways they never expected.
Every week, Lexie visits Beth, and they sit together over tea and biscuits, sharing stories and laughter. For Beth, these visits are a bright spot in her week. “It’s a joy to see her,” Beth says. “I look forward to her very much. Particularly when you’re with a lot of old people… She’s always bright and happy, and we discuss all sorts of things."
Over the past year, their friendship has blossomed. Beth loves to talk about her big family, and for Lexie, these conversations have given her a deeper appreciation for her own loved ones. Their bond isn’t just about companionship- it’s a lifeline that keeps Beth connected to the world beyond her apartment.
This is more than just a friendship - it’s a connection that bridges the generational divide, bringing warmth and joy into both of their lives.
“I never knew how rewarding it would be to participate in this program and how it could bring me a great friend!”
Beth and Lexie’s story is a testament to the power of connection and the difference a simple act of kindness can make in someone’s life. It reminds us that no matter what stage of life we’re in, we all need someone to share our journey with. Ongoing support from people like you allows us to connect volunteers like Lexie with isolated people like Beth, and equip them with the necessary skills, training and guidance.
