On a warm autumn day at the beautiful Elanora County Club, 72 women got into the spirit of giving by participating in the second Women in Red Golf Day. The annual event was hosted by Society of Women Leaders Founding Member, Caroline Furlong, and generously supported by Blackmores.
Registration started at 12 noon with women setting off in groups of four at 1:00pm. Dressed to support the Red Cross in their red and white golfing attire, the women were keen to have some fun despite the soaring temperatures on the course. It wasn’t just the golfers who braved the afternoon heat, with the local Red Belly black snakes coming out to show their bellies in support.
As the women finished their round, they were greeted with a beautiful cold glass of Piper Heidsieck, canapés and the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to support the Australian Red Cross. Tickets sold fast with the incredible top prize on offer – two tickets to the women’s final at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Before dinner, the golfers heard from Deputy Chair of SWL, Susan Wynne who reminded them why their participation in the golf day was so important. From young people who face incredible challenges raising children without being able fully read and write themselves, to heroic Red Cross aid workers who leave their families, often in the middle of the night, to help those most in need during a humanitarian emergency in some of the most dangerous places in the world. Funds raised from golf day will support these vital programs, selected by the members of the Society of Women Leaders and helping thousands of women and children.
After dinner, kindly provided by Caroline, the lucky raffle tickets were drawn, with the runners up receiving huge hampers of Blackmores goodies. The night’s auction was also a roaring success, with the top prize of a luxury break on Kangaroo Island, courtesy of Bailie Lodges. Following some furious bidding, the lucky winner put in a very generous bid of $6,000.
In total, over $35,000 was raised to support the vital humanitarian work of the Red Cross, meaning that the Society of Women Leaders will be able to support hundreds more women and children in 2018.
Thank you to all of the generous hosts, supporters and sponsors that made the Women in Red golf day and the fantastic fundraising possible – Caroline Furlong, Barbara Fletcher, Blackmores, Hayley Baillie, Elanora Country Club and The Oatley Family.
