When he was younger Vernon’s life took a downwards spiral after he began drinking. “I became an alcoholic (while) being a carer looking after my mum, so I could find time to sleep … When I went to rehab I recognised the science of what it does to you. I said sorry probably 200 times.”
After he stopped drinking, Vernon spent three-and-a-half years living on the streets, before finding his way to our community support centre. “It was a good influence. When I saw people taking turns in cooking I got a sense of what family meant. We’re all part of the street family.”
Vernon doesn’t live on the streets anymore. “I have the best place in Brisbane, I have two kittens … they eat more food than me.”
