Michi - Bangladesh

Michi was born in a Red Cross hospital and works in a Red Cross hospital.

Right now the Japanese midwife and nurse is based in a field hospital in a Bangladesh camp for those fleeing Myanmar. Part of her job is to search the camp for pregnant women.

“Even when there are complications mothers reject going to hospital because no one can care for her other children.” Michi and a group of community volunteers provide antenatal check-ups. “Many women will be fasting during Ramadan. Our biggest concern for them is dehydration,” she says. “I am a Red Cross person.

Many doctors and nurses do refugee work and their mission ends when they go home. As long as I am with the Red Cross, my mission will continue.” Photo: Lynette Nyman/IFRC
