Merciana - Indonesia

Every day Merciana has to lug heavy containers of clean water home to her family.

“Normally I collect water at the river. Usually, if there is a lot (of people) piling up it means five to six hours.” She has to travel more than a kilometre to fetch this water, and comes home carrying a bucket on her head and a jerry can in each arm.

She hopes one day soon that will change. “I want to ask for a tank for clean water, closer … So I can care for the kids.” Red Cross work in communities like Merciana’s to improve access to maternal health care and safe drinking water. Photo: Australian Red Cross/Dilini Perera.
