Madelena - South Sudan

"The Red Cross represents humanity to me," says Madelena, a volunteer at a Red Cross camp for displaced persons.

Madelena trained as a first aid responder in her rural village four years ago and continues to volunteer for South Sudan Red Cross since moving to the camp in the city of Wau in 2016.

"Where I'm from, there is no health care facilities," Madelena says. She was often the first responder, stabilising villagers until they could get help from a clinic. "I am always ready for the call to respond," she says. Photo: IFRC/Corrie Butler.
