Julia - Norway

“We think a lot about the families of the victims – that they get their loved ones home is the biggest driving force for us.”

Julia recently led a Red Cross rescue team searching for the bodies of four skiers killed in an avalanche. Working in minus 26 degree conditions alongside other rescue organisations, they used signals from the skiers’ avalanche alarms to find and dig them out.

“The work required a lot from everyone who participated. Small windows of good weather meant the crews were prepared not to be able to travel down before the evening came,” says Julia, who is a volunteer. “We were prepared to spend the night in the mountains.”
