Tropical Cyclone Gita
It’s been a devastating time for thousands of people across the Pacific after the powerful Cyclone Gita hit Samoa, Tonga, Fiji and now New Zealand. Our Red Cross colleagues are out assessing damage and distributing clean water, tarpaulins, soap and lots of other essential items.
We haven’t been asked by the IFRC to launch an appeal at this stage. However, we have decided all donations made to our Disaster Relief and Recovery until February 26 will go to help with the humanitarian response underway in the Pacific.
Above is a photo of Salonie Fusitu’a. She and her kids went to an evacuation centre on the night the cyclone hit Tonga. Her husband, brother and 94-year-old grandfather stayed behind – the younger two sheltering in their car when it got really rough. Their house was severely damaged and it now leans dramatically to one side. Red Cross teams were out assessing the damage and dropped off a tent to Salonie and her family, and it’s now set up in her backyard.
Our website needs your vote
We just found out a couple of days ago that our new website is a finalist in a global site of the year 2017 competition organised by Kentico – the company that runs the content management system that sits behind our site. We are one of three finalists in the best NGO category – up against World Vision Canada and Red R UK.
The winner will be decided by public vote and will be announced next month. If you love our website we would love your vote – cast it here.
Great work and congratulations to our digital team who led the project to redesign our website.
