Andrea Lee recalls being airlifted with her family out of Darwin on a Hercules plane after Cyclone Tracy in 1974. “Red Cross was at the airport helping and recording details of people being evacuated,” she remembers. More than 30 years later, as a Red Cross staff member, she supported people evacuated into Darwin after the catastrophic tsunami which hit south-east Asia in January 2005.
Andrea is one of around 3,000 Red Cross staff members across Australia. This year, staff were supported through a range of training programs, with 497 staff members completing management training courses and 635 staff members completing informal short training courses such as time management, stress management and conflict resolution. More than 70 induction programs for new starters were conducted throughout the year.
Our staff have access to flexible working arrangements and purchased leave arrangements, salary packaging benefits (which have seen an increase in participation this financial year) and novated lease benefits. Each state and territory has a Social & Wellbeing Committee to engage staff, and an Employee Assistance Program which provides free and confidential counselling to both staff and volunteers.
