Facts and circumstances of collection 
We may collect your information: 

  • directly from you (for example, through your application or when you contacted us by telephone); or 
  • directly from third parties who can confidentially verify your personal information (including the Royal Fire Service (NSW), Department of Family and Community Services (NSW), Department of Communities (WA), Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors (QLD), Department of Health and Human Services (VIC), and Department of Human Services (SA), or other similar state-based government agencies). 

The information that you provide includes your personal information. Your personal information is protected by law, including the Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principles. Your personal information collected is used primarily for Red Cross’ purposes. 

Is the collection being made because a law or Court order applies? 
No law or Court order applies to the collection of this information. 

Why does Red Cross need to collect this information? 
We need to collect this information so that we can: 

  • review your eligibility and process your application 
  • verify your identity 
  • respond to your feedback or enquiries 
  • provide you with information about our activities or refer you to other suitable services 

The primary purpose for which the information is being collected 
The primary purpose of collecting this information is to assess your eligibility and process your application for an Emergency Grant as a result of the Australian bushfires 2019/2020 and for any future support arising from bushfire impact. 

The secondary purposes (if any) for which Red Cross is collecting this information 
A secondary purpose of collecting your information is to keep records of participation in the Emergency Grants program and allow us to refer you to related services or facilitate your participation in Red Cross activities. 

What happens if Red Cross doesn't collect this information? 
If Red Cross does not collect this information from you we will be unable to process your application for an Emergency Grant. 

We will be unable to verify or process your Emergency Grant without recording your real name. 

The organisations we usually disclose this information to are 
We may disclose your information to third parties that provide services to us or who can verify your information. These services include information technology organisations who provide us with the online application system and data storage, government agencies and departments (including Centrelink), banking organisations or any other organisations we may engage to assist with the administration of the Emergency Grants. These organisations may provide us with other similar services.

Will my information be stored offshore?  
Your information is stored in Australia by Australian Red Cross. Sometimes information technology organisations that we may disclose your information to are located outside Australia. For example, we may disclose your information to service providers in the United States.
