Inspiring program supports Perth families when they need it most

Monday 11 September 2017

The work of the Australian Red Cross in supporting Perth's vulnerable families has been recognised for its role in child protection.

The Red Cross Family Support Team has won the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) award for Inspiring Child Safety Programs.

The Family Support Program is volunteer based and operates in metropolitan Perth, supporting families with an infant under 12 months of age.

The manager of the program, Daisy Ashworth, says the program supports families when they need it most.

"We know that bringing up kids can be one of the toughest jobs in the world. We work with all kinds of families from mums who are going through or at risk of postnatal depression to families experiencing financial or relationship issues." Ms Ashworth said.

We really understand the social pressures families are facing, including FIFO working arrangements, financial changes, relationship breakdown and isolation from extended families.

"We take a preventative approach to child abuse and neglect, providing parents with skills and support within their community and creating a nurturing environment for children."

"Our staff and volunteers feel a deep sense of pride in this program. They love working with families when they need it most and this award is recognition of all the hard work they've put in." Ms Ashworth concluded.
