Recently arrived migrant students are welcomed to life in Australia through the Migrant Youth Orientation Program (MYOP).
The eight-week program, funded by NSW Family and Community Services, aims to give students a better knowledge of their new community. At the same time, students build confidence, support networks and learn how to access community services available to them.
Who is the program for?
Students aged 12 to 18 enrolled in four Sydney Intensive English High Schools can access the program. MYOP welcomes students from all over the world, including Bangladesh, China, Korea, Nepal and Brazil. Programs are tailored to the needs of individual schools, and look to fill gaps and challenges specific to that group of students.
What sort of educational opportunities are offered?
The program links with the school curriculum, supporting the school's orientation, settlement and welfare programs. It takes students through a diverse range of cultural, well-being and community topics, including:
- beach safety
- fire, rescue and police talks
- healthy eating workshops
- visits to Migrant Resource Centres
- bushcare workshops.
Excursions to places like:
- Parliament House
- libraries
- universities and TAFEs
- performing arts centres.
