Australian Red Cross, in partnership with NSW Health, is offering FREE Older Person Mental Health First Aid courses at the following locations. See below for details about eligibility.

These courses are fully funded by NSW Health. The objective of this funded training is to build community literacy and capacity to recognise mental health issues in older people and provide initial assistance and support. Community members aged 65+ are especially encouraged to attend.

The course will:

  • equip people in the community with the skills needed to support older people experiencing mental health issues
  • build confidence and capacity to provide early assistance
  • provide a supportive response in referring people to the most appropriate service
  • build community-based support for older people experiencing mental health issues.

About the course

What is the Older Person Mental Health First Aid (OPMHFA) course?
This course covers older people’s mental health, social and emotional wellbeing and mental health problems. It includes strategies for working with older people who may be experiencing challenges with their mental health. See more details about the course.

Who is eligible to do the course?
The goal of the training is to help people in the community to support older people experiencing mental health issues. The course is open to members of the community, relatives and friends of older people with mental health issues. People over 65 years of age who are currently supporting an older person with mental health issues are especially encouraged to attend.

Where and when is the training taking place?
These FREE courses are being offered at Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. Find course venue details, dates and make a booking online.

Standard Mental Health First Aid courses

Australian Red Cross is also offering public standard Mental Health First Aid courses (for a fee) at Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie. See course dates at these locations and book online.
