The practical class is for students who have completed the online learning component. The full course is for students who have not completed any first aid training, or their first aid certificates are no longer valid. If you’re attending a practical assessment class, please be sure to bring a copy of your certificate from the online learning component with you. It must have your name on it.

Students who withdraw from a course and wish to seek a refund or have the amount they owe on their fees reduced must apply to Red Cross in writing more than five (5) days prior to commencement of course using EXFRM41A Application for Withdrawal. See refund policy.

Please transfer your course early as a 20% transfer fee applies to any request for transfer where the notice period is less than five (5) working days. See refund policy.

Anyone who enrols in accredited training is a student, even if only for a day or part of a day. The first aid units are part of the national Vocational Education and Training (VET) system and as such have a number of mandatory (legal) requirements by government and its agents. One of these requirements is the Unique Student Identifier (USI). More information about the USI can be found here. Without a valid USI, we will not be able to issue a certificate (Statement of Attainment). Providing your USI enables your Registered Training Organisation to upload your training data to your training record – so you’ll have a record of all training you have completed in one place.

Certificates will be issued within 30 days. We try to issue certificates within a week, depending on your location. Delays in issuing certificates can be due to issues validating your Unique Student Identifier (USI), or incomplete information on your enrolment form.

No. The online certificate is just evidence that you have successfully completed the theoretical/ knowledge requirements of the unit. It is stored with your record of training and assessment.

Book into a practical course at your closest training location.

There are no pre-requisites for first aid units, however, students refreshing their courses (CPR or First Aid) need to bring evidence that they have completed the training within the recommended timeframe.

We provide courses in many regional areas around the country. Please view our interactive map to see the nearest location to you.

Most of our training locations have tea and coffee making facilities and water is available. We try to include details specific to your venue as part of your booking confirmation.

Red Cross is internationally known as a provider and educator of first aid, and it was decided that we focus on our strengths in that area.

Yes. The practical course relies on the knowledge you have gained in the online course.

You will be required to complete the online learning and assessment prior to attending a course to do your practical assessment. The trainer will not have time to explain theoretical components to you which may make completing the practical tasks difficult. Remember that everyone else in the course will have completed the online learning, so the trainer needs to attend to their needs as a priority.

First Aid enquiries (which course should book?)

The minimum certification for a workplace first aider according to the First Aid Code of Practice is HLTAID003 Provide first aid. This course includes CPR (HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and first aid for a range of illnesses. The Code of Practice and the Australian Resuscitation Council recommend that CPR skills are refreshed annually and first aid skills every three years.

For more information on course costs, find a course near you.

Certificates are usually mailed to your nominated address within a week of your training, depending on your location.

Many locations have training on the weekends. Find course dates here.

If you completed your first aid training within the last three years, you can enrol in a refresher course. If you completed your CPR training a year ago, you can enrol in a refresher course.

You should only book the practical session after you have completed the online component. You can purchase the online course here.

The first aid certificates are not valid internationally. We do accept the New Zealand Red Cross CPR certificate as evidence of completion of the CPR course and as such it can be used to enrol in a refresher course. As the first aid units are part of the Australian Vocational Education and Training system, we would need more evidence of competency in first aid other than a certificate provided by an international training organisation.

International students should do their first aid course with a registered CRICOS training organisation. Red Cross is not a CRICOS registered training organisation.

Yes. The enrolment form has a space for parent/guardian permission. We want as many people as possible to do first aid training. There may be issues with strength and ability to complete the accredited requirements, but the training will still be valid and relevant. We have special courses for children under 14.

The CPR component of all first aid courses specifies that CPR on the adult manikin must be performed on the floor. The rationale is that the majority of collapses occur on the ground/floor.

The only course that accepts infants/children in a course is First Aid for Babies and Children. We do not allow infants/children into the accredited first aid courses.
