What is the Red Cross Calling campaign?
Red Cross Calling is a major national fundraising campaign that has been running for over 69 years. It is held between 1st and 31st March each year, and Red Cross members, community groups, schools, workplaces and individuals across Australia come together to fundraise for Australian Red Cross.
Through running community fundraising activities such as public coin collections, local doorknocks and hosted events, vital funds are raised to help vulnerable people and communities in Australia and across the region.
How can I get involved?
There are many ways you can get involved including coordinating a public collection, doorknocking in your local area or hosting an event of your own such as a BBQ, cake stall or trivia night. You can also take part in the Australia Answers online fundraising challenge this year. Is Red Cross Calling a national campaign?
Yes. Red Cross Calling is happening in every state and territory in Australia.
Does it cost anything to take part?
No. There is no cost to get involved in Red Cross Calling. If you are hosting an event, please be aware that there may be associated costs.
How much do I have to raise?
Every dollar helps people in need. The more money we can raise together, the more support Red Cross can give people who are experiencing hardship. There is no minimum or maximum amount you must raise. Just do your best and have some fun!
What fundraising tools are available to assist with my fundraising efforts?
Red Cross has produced a range of fundraising tools to assist various groups to promote and fundraise for Red Cross Calling. These tools are listed on your Registration Form and will be posted to you upon registration being received. Each item is free of charge. Items available include:
- Donation Boxes - perfect to put at a point of sale (e.g. cash register/counter) or reception desk. These are designed to be used in areas that are attended at all times. Please note, these donation boxes are not secure. If you require a secure plastic donation bucket, please contact the Red Cross Calling Team on 1800 811 700
- Promotional Posters (A3 & A4) - these can be used to display in local businesses, cafes, schools, social clubs or retail stores to raise awareness about how people can get involved and support Red Cross Calling
- Event Posters (A3 & A4) - perfect to display around your local area within your businesses, schools or social clubs to promote your fundraising activity. The more people that know about what you are doing for Red Cross Calling, the more donations you will get

Can I doorknock anytime throughout March?
Yes, however, some restrictions do apply in each State and Territory. Permits have been secured so that you can doorknock during the times authorised between 1st - 31st March 2017. Please contact the Red Cross Calling Team on 1800 811 700 if you would like a copy of the permit for your collection zone or refer to each State and Territory legislation below.
What is the Australia Answers Challenge?
For the first time, we are introducing an online peer-to-peer fundraising challenge as part of Red Cross Calling in 2017.
Participants will take on one of three challenges related to an area of our work, asking their friends and family to sponsor them via an online platform. The timeframe of the challenge will be determined by how much money the participant raises, giving their family and friends an incentive to see them tough it out! If participants raise up to $150 they take on the challenge for 3 days, from $150 to $300 they take it on for 1 week; and if they raise over $300 they will stick to the challenge for a month.
While the challenges are linked to different areas of our work by theme, this doesn't mean that the funds they raise will be tied to that area.
I live in QLD, when can I collect?
Statewide permission has been secured for doorknocking from Friday 17 March 2017 to Thursday 30 March 2017 between 9am and 5pm. QLD government only allocate a two-week period each year for statewide door to door appeals. Street collections can be conducted from Monday 13 March 2017 to Sunday 19 March 2017 between 9am and 5pm and a separate permit is required for this. Please contact the Red Cross Calling Team on 1800 811 700 if you would like a copy of the QLD statewide permit or require a permit to conduct a street collection.
I live in WA, when can I collect?
Statewide permission is secured for doorknocking in WA every Monday to Saturday between 9am to 6pm from Wednesday 1st March 2017 to Friday 31st March 2017. Only two Sundays in March are permitted Sunday 19th and Sunday 26th March 2017. Please contact the Red Cross Calling Team on 1800 811 700 if you would like a copy of the WA statewide permit.
I live in SA, when can I collect?
Public collections and doorknocks can be conducted from Wednesday 1st March to Friday 31st March 2017 between the following times:

Some further restrictions may apply in particular Council areas including exemption of collections on Sundays and Public Holidays. Collectors will be advised by Red Cross if there is a restriction in the area in which they intend to collect. I live in VIC, when can I collect?
Door to door collections can be run in most council areas from Wednesday 1st March 2017 to Friday 31st March 2017 between 9am and 6pm. Some restrictions including exemption of collections on Sundays and Public Holidays apply in certain areas. Collectors will be advised by Red Cross if there is a restriction in the area in which they intend to collect. Intersection collections require approval from the local council and VIC Police. If you would like to conduct an intersection collection or a public coin collection please contact the Red Cross Calling team on 1800 811 700 to organise a permit.
I live in NSW, ACT, TAS or NT, when can I collect?
Public collections and doorknocks can be conducted from Wednesday 1st March to Friday 31st March 2017 between 9am and 6pm.
I would like to collect in a shopping centre, in the CBD or a public place. Do I need permission?
Yes. You will need to contact centre management, the local council or property owners to see if permission or a special permit is required. If you would like us to help you with this, please contact the Red Cross Calling Team on 1800 811 700.
How long is my ID badge valid for?
Your volunteer collector ID badge is valid from 1st - 31st March 2017. You must wear this in a visible place at all times when collecting for Red Cross Calling. If you wish to fundraise beyond 31st March, you must contact the Red Cross Calling Team to gain approval by phone: 1800 811 700 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
Are there any age restrictions to take part in Red Cross Calling?
Yes. Volunteers 15 years and younger must be accompanied by a responsible adult over the age of 18 years.
I am thinking of holding an event for Red Cross Calling at a venue that is not my home. Am I covered for accidents or injury whilst holding my event? What happens if attendees at my event have an accident or injury?
Australian Red Cross Public Liability Insurance only covers Red Cross staff, members and registered volunteers. This does not include people who attend your events.
If you are holding an event at a public venue, e.g. community centre or rotary club, please contact the local council, or the venue management, to ensure they have Public Liability Insurance that is valid on the day of your event.
What should I wear when collecting or holding a fundraising event? How should I be prepared for extreme weather conditions on the day of my collection or fundraising event?
Australian Red Cross strives to provide a safe work environment for all of its staff, volunteers and those associated with the organisation. Australian Red Cross is committed to the proper management of occupational health, safety and welfare in line with legislative requirements.
When fundraising for Australian Red Cross, please ensure you check the weather forecast on the morning of your collection or fundraising event. If the temperature is predicted to be 36 degrees or above at 12pm, please reschedule your collection, doorknock or fundraising event for a different day. Please ensure you dress appropriately for the weather - remember to wear a hat and comfortable flat shoes, use 30+ sunscreen and stay hydrated at all times, taking regular breaks when needed. Where possible, collect in pairs. Always let someone know where you are going and when you should be back. Where possible carry a mobile phone and remember to call 000 in case of an emergency.

Can I help promote Red Cross Calling?
Absolutely! While we will be doing everything we can to promote Red Cross Calling, we would appreciate your help in getting as many people as possible to support the campaign. One of the most valuable ways is of course, word of mouth. Also make sure your local community knows about your fundraising activities by using the event posters in your fundraising kit.
Where do the funds go?
Funds will go towards supporting the everyday work of Red Cross, helping people and communities in crisis - whether it's responding in times of disaster, providing clean drinking water for a remote Pacific village, or helping an elderly Australian to overcome personal hardship and disadvantage. Thank you for helping us to continue to be there for those who need us most.

Will the funds raised in this community/town/region/state stay in this area?
Money raised will support our everyday services in Australian and overseas communities where the need is the greatest rather than being tied to a specific town, community or program.
Are the volunteer collectors paid?
No, they are unpaid volunteers. All fundraisers who have registered to do public collections, doorknock or hold an event are kindly donating their time, energy and enthusiasm.
How do I know the person is a genuine collector or fundraiser?
Red Cross takes measures to ensure that people fundraising on our behalf are easily identifiable.
Upon successful registration being received, all Red Cross Calling fundraisers will receive an official letter of authority to fundraise. Fundraisers holding collections or doorknocking will be provided with an identification badge to be worn while collecting and will carry a Red Cross Calling receipt book. For public collections, official Red Cross Calling donation buckets with security lids will be used.

How many Red Cross Calling collectors are there?
During March, thousands of people throughout Australia come together to raise money to support Red Cross Calling, including Red Cross members, volunteers, community groups, workplaces and individuals.
There are also many schools and community groups who coordinate large public coin collections with hundreds of students and/or personnel collecting in groups at any given time.
How do I return the funds I raise?
There are several ways you can deposit the money you have raised from your Red Cross Calling activity.
1.) Make a secure online donation. You can make a quick donation online at redcrosscalling.org.au. Alternatively, you can call 1800 811 700.
2.) Send a cheque or money order. You can send cheques or money orders directly to us marked 'Australian Red Cross - Red Cross Calling 2017' and post them to:

3.) Bank deposit or transfer. Funds can be deposited straight into the Red Cross Calling bank account (BSB: 063 010, Account 1096 4232). Please use the Commonwealth Bank deposit slip from the front of your receipt book. If you do not have a deposit slip, make sure to use your receipt book number (printed at the top of your receipt book) or your full name/organisation/group name as your reference.

How long do I have to deposit money raised from my event?
All money raised from your Red Cross Calling activity needs to be deposited as soon as possible after your event has finished. Please make sure to return all the money you have raised to Red Cross before 31st May 2017 to ensure the total amount is processed before the end of the financial year and gets allocated correctly against the campaign.
Are funds raised from Red Cross Calling tax deductible?
Yes. All donations over the value of $2 are tax deductible. Please refer to your Red Cross Calling receipt book to issue receipts as requested by your supporters.
