Greek Fires Appeal

Thank you for your support to help families affected by the Greek forest fires.

Forest fires that scorched communities in the Western and Eastern Attica regions of Greece and caused the deaths of more than 90 people.  This was the worst disaster in recent years, and for many of the affected, the worst disaster of their lives.

Red Cross was at the fires searching for victims, delivering first aid, and later, providing relief and support to survivors.

Our Greek Fires Appeal is now closed. Thanks to your generous donations we raised $23,000. Thank you for your support.

If you have raised money for this appeal and still need to bank it, please contact us on 1800 RED CROSS (1800 733 276) or contactus@redcross.org.au

Funds raised by this appeal will support Red Cross in Greece to help:

  • provide emergency relief and recovery assistance
  • prevent future tragedies through disaster preparedness, risk reduction and early warning
  • send specialist aid workers
  • work in areas affected by the fires to strengthen local resilience.

About the appeal

Funds raised through the Australian Red Cross Greek Fires Appeal will be channeled to Red Cross in Greece in order to help:

  • provide emergency relief and recovery assistance such as food, water, sanitation, shelter and health initiatives including blood
  • work with communities across Greece to prevent future tragedies through disaster preparedness, risk reduction and early warning
  • send specialist aid workers to assist in initial assessment, relief, recovery and disaster and crisis management operations
  • work in areas affected by the fires to strengthen local resilience and deliver effective relief and recovery services.

With the advice of Red Cross in Greece, Australian Red Cross has set a target of $500,000 to contribute to the Greek Fires appeal. Once this target is reached, Red Cross may close the appeal.

No more than 10% of money raised by the Greek Fires Appeal will be used cover indirect administrative and appeal costs such as receipting donations, IT costs and overheads. Any interest earned on donations will be invested back into the appeal.

Should funds raised exceed the amount required to meet the emergency needs of people in affected areas or if there are changes in circumstances beyond Red Cross’ control, Red Cross will direct excess funds to responding to international crises and building resilience.

Please note that donations to the Australian Red Cross Greek Fires appeal are not tax-deductible.

Tax-deductibility status is determined by the Australian Taxation Office and donations to be used in Greece are not eligible under the Overseas Aid Gift Deduction Scheme.

Red Cross understands people may have a strong desire to donate items. While this generosity is appreciated, our experience has shown that affected communities recover sooner when they can make their own choices. This includes choosing and purchasing goods rather than being given goods.

Another benefit of allowing those affected to choose their own purchases is that money is being put back into the community to stimulate local businesses, an important part of the local economic recovery.

Red Cross is unable to accept offers of goods such as food and clothing; however, we appreciate and accept donations of clothing through our Red Cross Shops network to support the broader everyday work of Red Cross. To find out what the needs are across Australia, contact your local Red Cross Shop.
