Felis' Story

When Red Cross came to install a gravity-fed water system Felis' and her family's life changed.

Felis spent 5 hours every day for 44 years collecting water.

Scaling mountainsides armed with nothing but her strength, determination and a pair of flimsy flip flops she would draw, filter, clean and carry as much water as she could - 20 litres to be exact.

Sometimes I would fall and spill the water. I would be in pain and sadness.

After these journey's Felis' bones would hurt, her neck was permanently crooked and it would take her many hours to recover.

"It hurt, but we had to put up with it. We had no water back then." she says.

But when Red Cross came to install a gravity-fed water system Felis' and her family's life changed.

She helped construct the system along with others in her village. It took three years to complete and it was hard work, but now they have water right at their front doorstop.

Now it’s just two minutes to collect the water! When the water reached the tap we danced for a week or more! We would like to thank Red Cross very much, the community of Atudara is very thankful!
