For people like Lilyana, the festive season can be one of the toughest times of the year.
"I was in a very dark place a few years ago, after losing my only remaining son in 2009. I'm 91 now. I was fine when I knew I had my wonderful Peter to call whenever I needed to. But then he was gone."
Loneliness is more than a trivial problem in Australia. In fact, older people who say they are lonely have a 14% greater risk of dying prematurely. We're working to turn this statistic around by being there for the elderly who are isolated and at risk of an accident or injury. Every day, even at Christmas, our team calls thousands of people like Lilyana, to make sure they're ok.
"Now, every morning, come rain, hail or sunshine, Red Cross calls me and I am most deeply grateful for it. It's a beautiful, beautiful feeling. It reminds me that I'm not alone."
Your donation today will change lives for people in need in Australia and across our region. Keep reading to find out more.
