Red Cross Calling, our major fundraising appeal, is behind target and Australian Red Cross is urging those who have not yet donated to donate online and help other Australians in need of assistance.
The funds raised through Red Cross Calling are used to run more than 60 community services right around the country.
Australian Red Cross is hoping to raise $8 million in 2006 to reach more vulnerable Australians than ever before. Currently, we have raised almost $6.4 million. That's over $1.6 million below target.
That extra $1.6 million could assist many, many people in many different ways.
For example, our Telecross service, which makes a daily telephone call to check on those members of our community who have been left alone or isolated from friends or family, could make nearly 2 million additional calls per year.
'In our rapidly ageing society Telecross is one of our important domestic services which we think will see hugely increased demand in coming years' said Australian Red Cross CEO Robert Tickner. 'This service is so important because it allows people to stay in the comfort of their own homes safe in the knowledge that they will receive a phone call each day to check on their wellbeing, providing reassurance and personal contact.'
