The Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 is closed and funds can no longer be accepted. Closing the Appeal does not mean closing off assistance for people and communities affected. Assistance will continue to be available through the Department of Human Services.
We would like to thank the hundreds of thousands of people, as well as governments and corporate Australia, who contributed to the Appeal. The Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009 has raised more than $379 million, which has been transferred to a trust account established by the Victorian Government. This, together with interest and other donations paid direct to the Victorian Government, means that more than $389 million is available to support individuals and communities in the wake of this country's worst natural disaster.
The Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund was established on 8 February by Australian Red Cross in partnership with the Victorian and Federal Governments to support people and communities affected by the 2009 Victorian bushfires. An Independent Advisory Panel, chaired by Pat McNamara, is made up of community leaders who oversee the Fund's operation and the allocation of funds.
Red Cross provides relief for people in crisis across Australia and Asia Pacific. While we are no longer able to accept donations to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal 2009, you can support our work by making a regular monthly donation as a Humanitarian Partner at www.redcross.org.au/howyoucanhelp_regulargiving.htm [***link***].
