FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
24 November 2003
Australian Red Cross is recruiting volunteers for its Wodonga-based Telecross program. Two information sessions will be held on Monday 8 December 2003 at the Trudewind Neighbourhood House, Quirk Street, West Wodonga at 2pm and 6pm.
Telecross is an important Red Cross service that ensures people living independently have access to regular contact from a friendly volunteer to check that they are safe and well. For a variety of reasons people sometimes just don't have the social networks to check in on them regularly and this can be detrimental to thehealth and well being for many, particularly the frail aged.
Australian Red Cross is looking to expand the service within Wodonga, specifically looking for volunteers who are able to make calls to clients between 8am and 10am 7 days a week. A convenor is also required for the Wodonga-based Telecross program. The role of convenor includes visiting prospective clients, assisting Telecross volunteers and some basic administration.
The information sessions will go into more detail about the roles and responsibilities of Telecross volunteers. To register your interest in either of the information sessions please RSVP to 03 5721 5170.
"Telecross is an invaluable service to our community. The number of older adults that are choosing to live alone is on the increase but some still need a little assistance to help them remain independent," said Andrew Hilton, Executive Director Australian Red Cross Victoria.
"Being a Telecross volunteer is easy and convenient. You can make the calls from your home or your office, whatever suits. Telecross volunteers feel positive about helping people to remain living independently and also for doing their bit for Red Cross"
Telecross also operates in Albury as part of Australian Red Cross, New South Wales. Those living in Albury and interested in volunteering should contact the Albury office on (02) 6041 2190.
