In 1996 the Australian Red Cross Victoria entered into an agreement with the University of Melbourne to sponsor the establishment of a Chair of International Humanitarian Law at the Law Faculty. The position was established and Professor Tim McCormack was appointed. Since that date the Chair has achieved great success in promoting the study and research of IHL.
The Chair has had a national and international impact teaching hundreds of Australian and international students. Tim McCormack was also instrumental in the establishment of the Asia/Pacific Military Law Centre. The Australian Red Cross continues to financially support the Chair.
