Australian Red Cross, Victoria Gives 40 Farming Families a Break
20 January 2003
Australian Red Cross, Victoria has pledged support to a United Dairy Farmers Victoria program designed to give drought affected dairy farmers a break away from their farms whilst relief milkers continue to manage the herd.

‘Time Out’ was developed by the United Dairy Farmers group, who wanted to do something for their fellow members as it became increasingly clear that the drought was having a devastating effect on family relationships and the health and wellbeing of many dairy farmers.

UDV President Mr Peter Owen said that with the support of the Australian Red Cross, Victoria, almost a third of the families who have applied for the program would be given good news in the coming days.

'In many cases, spouses and children will have been working much harder and longer than they normally would, missing social and recreational opportunities over an extended period of time, and that alone creates a tremendous amount of stress and tension' said Mr Owen.

'Through the Time Out program, and with the support of the Melbourne business community, accommodation, meal vouchers, and tickets to sporting events and attractions will give farmers and their families a real holiday.  For many this is the first break they will have had in many years and could not be more timely or more needed,' said Mr Owen.

To support the Time Out program or to enquire about applications contact the UDV on (03) 9207 5600.
