Assistance and Care in the Emergency Department Geelong Hospital  

POSITION TITLE:  ACE Visitor  

DEPARTMENT:  Community Programs Development  

POSITION LOCATION: Emergency Department, Geelong Hospital / Barwon Health

POSITION REPORTS TO: Convenor

LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT: Ongoing

DAYS WORKING:  As rostered

TIMES:  3-hour shift as agreed with the Convenor

POSITION CONTEXT:     
Assistance & Care in the Emergency Department (ACE) is a Red Cross program aimed at meeting the personal support needs of patients and their attending family members/friends in the Emergency Department of the Hospital. Red Cross volunteers offer companionship, a cup of tea/coffee, a magazine, a conversation, or assistance with making calls to family members, during the time in the Emergency department, which can be extended.

They work in partnership with the staff, avoiding any involvement in medical procedures, or advice about such matters. Part of their aim is to relieve the staff of the requirement to attend to the personal support needs of the patients and their family members/friends, so that they can focus on the medical work.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE:
* Work cooperatively with Emergency Department staff to ensure that the needs of patients and attending family/carers are being met
* Work according to Red Cross program policy and procedures, including confidentiality
* Follow Emergency Department protocols & procedures
* Complete records and documentation as required, and inform the Convenor of any issues or concerns regarding the service
* Wear Red Cross and Emergency Department identification while delivering the service
* Inform the Convenor of any change in availability that may affect rostering
* Attend orientation, training and meetings as required for the delivery of the service

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
* Interest in providing a humanitarian service, and ability to work within the fundamental principles of Red Cross
* Ability to work within operational policies & procedures, and maintain confidentiality
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Ability to communicate effectively
* Ability to complete tasks reliably, as agreed
* Satisfactory results from a Police Records Check, and a reference check
