Telecross Callers
Volunteer position profile

Position title: Telecross Caller

Department: Social Inclusion Programs

Position location: Narre Warren, Brighton

Position reports to: Telecross Convenor

Length of assignment: Ongoing

Days working: As rostered

Times: 8:00 am - 9:00 am

Position context

Telecross is a Red Cross service offering reassurance, personal contact and monitoring by telephone to people who are isolated and at risk. Telecross is free to the client, and completely confidential.

At the heart of the program is a short, friendly telephone call from a Red Cross volunteer, at a pre-arranged time, between 8:00am and 9:00am. If there is no answer, the volunteer will call twice more, at 10 minute intervals. If there is no answer to all 3 calls, the volunteer will call one of the client's emergency contacts (usually a neighbour or friend) and arrange for them to visit the client's home and check that they are well.

People can be referred to Telecross by health professionals, social workers, or friends/relatives. They can also seek the service themselves. Telecross is very flexible, and can be arranged on a long or short term basis. It can be required for several years, or just for a few weeks while family members are away on holiday.

Principal responsibilities of the role

Telecross Callers are responsible for making the Telecross calls to clients from a local centre at the pre-arranged time, and activating emergency procedures if the calls are not answered.

  • ability to communicate effectively, particularly over the phone
  • ability to work within operational policies and procedures, and maintain confidentiality
