VOLUNTEER POSITION PROFILE
POSITION TITLE: Telecross Caller
DEPARTMENT: Community Programs Development
POSITION LOCATION: Mornington Peninsula, Brighton & Ringwood
POSITION REPORTS TO: Telecross Convenor
LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT: Ongoing
DAYS WORKING: As rostered
TIMES: 8:00 am – 9:00 am
POSITION CONTEXT: Telecross is a Red Cross service offering reassurance, personal contact and monitoring by telephone to people who are isolated and at risk. Telecross is free to the client, and completely confidential.
At the heart of the program is a short, friendly telephone call from a Red Cross volunteer, at a pre-arranged time, usually between 8:00 to 8:30 am. If there is no answer, the volunteer will call twice more, at 10 minute intervals. If there is no answer to all 3 calls, the volunteer will call one of the person’s pre-arranged emergency contacts (usually a neighbour or friend) and arrange for them to visit the person’s home and check that they are well. If the person is unwell, the emergency contact activates the appropriate emergency service agency, and informs the volunteer. If none of the emergency contacts are available, the volunteer will call on the local police for their assistance.
People can be referred to Red Cross for this service by health professionals, social workers, or friends/relatives. They can also seek the service themselves. Telecross is very flexible, and can be arranged on a long or short term basis. It can be required for several years, or just for a few weeks while family members are away on holiday.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE: Telecross Callers are responsible for making the Telecross calls to clients at the pre-arranged time, and activating emergency procedures if the calls are not answered, according to service procedures. If the Caller is unable to make the calls, or will be away when rostered, he/she must inform the Convenor.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: * Interest in providing a humanitarian service, and ability to work as part of a tem, within the Fundamental Principles of Red Cross * Interest in, and ability to work with, people, especially older adults * Ability to communicate effectively, particularly over the phone * Ability to work within operational policies and procedures, and maintain confidentiality * Ability to complete tasks reliably, as agreed * Ability to keep accurate written records * Satisfactory Police Records Check and reference check
Please note that Ringwood is a base service and volunteers are required to go into the office to make the calls.
