Emergency First Aid Team Member

Position title: Emergency First Aid Team Member

Department: Emergency Services

Reports: State Emergency First Aid Coordinator

Supervisor: Team Leader

Hours: Maximum 8 hours per shift -- 1 shift per day limit.
          Maximum 5 days during an activation with a break of 48 hours.

Position context

To assist Red Cross to meet agreed responsibilities as outlined in the Victorian Emergency Management Plan and State Health Emergency Response Plan. These arrangements require that Red Cross provide personnel to administer first aid during emergencies. Red Cross Emergency First Aid (EFA) teams operate from first aid posts in evacuation centres, at catering centres, staging areas and at other locations as directed by Ambulance Victoria. First Aid team members also participate in first aid posts at sporting and community events, coordinated by the Emergency First Aid Bookings Officer.

Principle responsibilities of the role

  • participate in minimum of 10 emergency first aid events (including activations) and 6 team meetings per year
  • maintain first aid skills including Workplace Level II First Aid, Emergency Asthma Training updated every 3 years. Advanced Resuscitation and CPR updated annually
  • participate in emergency exercises as necessary
  • perform a minimum of 10 first aid events (including activations) per year to maintain skills
  • participate in additional training i.e APDM, in house training or any other training if required
  • perform first aid duties as directed by Red Cross First Aid Team Leader / Team Liaison Officer as per Australian Resuscitation Council and Red Cross policies and procedures
  • ensure all paperwork is completed i.e First Aid post report forms are signed upon completion of a first aid post and that the Casualty Report Forms are correctly completed as required
  • adhere to uniform standards as outlined in EFA policies and procedures at all times.
  • be available to attend first aid activation's with Red Cross catering, registration, REDI support and personal support teams
  • perform first aid duties as directed by an Ambulance Victoria Officer or Red Cross First Aid Team Leader as per Australian Resuscitation Council and Australian Red Cross policies.


Specific requirements

Essential:

  • ensure commitment to the philosophy and principles of Red Cross Red Crescent Movement
  • adhere to the Seven Fundamental Principles of Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (being Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality)
  • a commitment to a child-safe organisation
  • the successful completion of a National Police Check, ability to positively contribute to child safe organisation, and adherence to Red Cross Child Protection Policies and Practices.

Skills and Experience:

  • ability to work with Operational Policies and Procedures and maintain confidentiality
  • ability to work as part of a team and take direction
  • ability to think clearly and work in physically demanding situations 
  • be available whenever possible in the event of an emergency
  • be prepared for activation with suitable clothing and equipment
  • knowledge of likely first aid requirements in emergency situations.

Desirable:

  • current driver's licence
