Emergency Services

The Emergency Services team is committed to assisting and supporting people and communities affected by an emergency. These teams are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day and are an integral part of the State's emergency management arrangements.

There are two ways you can get involved with Red Cross Emergency Services: as a REDiSupport volunteer or as a first aid volunteer.

REDiSupport: What we do

REDiSupport teams enable Red Cross to deliver a more flexible and effective response for emergencies of any scale, ranging from major disasters to residential single incidents.

REDiSupport teams are made up of highly-skilled volunteers who provide personal support and additional services to assist people (especially the most vulnerable) when it is most needed during response to and recovery from an emergency.

Personal support volunteers provide a friendly face following an emergency

REDiSupport volunteers provide the following services:

  • Personal support
Many people need a friendly face following an emergency. As a REDiSupport volunteer, you may be called to a single incident to simply sit with an individual and provide them with a blanket and drink, or you may be called to a major emergency to work in relief centres, doorknock affected areas, deliver response information, or even participate in community discussions.
  • Registration
After a massive emergency, there is a great need to let loved ones get in contact with those in the affected area. In this situation, Red Cross activates and provides emergency registration of affected individuals as well as setting up a call centre that allows loved ones to phone in and receive information about their loved one's situation.
  • Emergency catering
Food and drinks are rapidly deployed during many emergencies, including bush fires, floods, road accidents and house fires. In the event of an emergency, you may be given a 'hot box' (like an esky) and sent to a local restaurant or caf‚ to pick up meals. You will then be given the coordinates of the emergency and on arrival, will serve food to people affected, including emergency services personnel such as fire fighters, police officers, paramedics and SES.
  • Residential emergency response
In the event of a localised emergency, such as a house fire, you may be called on to assist a single person or family. You will provide a friendly face; food, toiletries and clothing from Red Cross supplies; and accommodation if necessary through agreements with local facilities.

Emergency First Aid: What we do

As a first aid volunteer, you will have the skills to respond to any first aid need that occurs in your immediate area. You will be called upon to work at community events, concerts, festivals, markets and other big gatherings to provide preventative care, response in emergency and assistance to paramedics if required.

After receiving first aid training, you will be asked to participate in several of these events each year. You will receive a uniform, backstage access and be roaming the event helping and assisting anyone in need.

Why should I volunteer?

Red Cross helps millions of people every year and you will be contributing to the single largest aid organisation in the world.

You will also benefit by:

  • receiving excellent free training
  • making great friends who are compassionate and like-minded
  • gaining a new perspective on the world by helping those affected by emergencies.

The time commitment is small, but the effect is great.

Volunteering is a great way to make new friends. You never know who you will meet.

Red Cross first aid volunteers take part in a variety of social events.
