Red Cross First Aid at the Royal Melbourne Show
Thursday 28 September 2006
It was school holidays with a twist for the 120 Red Cross First Aid volunteers at the Royal Melbourne Show.

Red Cross volunteers were involved at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds for a period of about six weeks. This included being on site during the set up and pack up of the show and also during the event.

Volunteers operated three separate first aid posts as well as a roaming first aid service to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the show.

According to Darryl McCarthur, Australian Red Cross Coordinator of First Aid and Events, Red Cross is more than capable of fulfilling such a large commitment.

“We are lucky to have great volunteers combined with state-of-the-art resources,” he said,  “This

includes our new First Aid Bus which is a full sized bus equipped with first aid materials in case of a major emergency. The bus is perfect for big events like this.”

Many volunteers travelled large distances to participate in this fun event. From Torquay to Horsham and all the way in between, volunteers enjoyed meeting other first-aiders  keen to putting their first aid skills to good use.

Red Cross First Aid volunteers all have a minimum Level 2 first aid qualification. Some volunteers are also paramedics or nurses, which allows Red Cross to respond to any situation faced.
