Retired Olympian With Golden Motivations
Preparing for her 13th Red Cross Herald Sun Murray Marathon is local Lower Templestowe resident Cecilia Burke. Cecilia is no stranger to the struggles of women in the sporting arena, particularly the trying conditions of a paddle race. In her lengthy career, Cecilia competed in both the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games as well as the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Entering in the only category available to women which were the 500 metre kayak race - she finished sixth and fourth respectively.

Mother of three-year-old twins Bobi Kaponay certainly is, training hard for the 404 kilometre Herald Sun Red Cross Murray Marathon in December. The Wantirna South resident is entering her second marathon, after a great experience in 2003. Her highlight for the event was crossing the finish line hand-in-hand with her husband.
