Retired Olympian With Golden Motivations
November 2004
In the 1950’s, sport was not an encouraged social experience for women. It was tough to be accepted into the sporting arena, and many women faced harsh mockery in the small number of events they were allowed to compete in.

Preparing for her 13th Red Cross Herald Sun Murray Marathon is local Lower Templestowe resident Cecilia Burke. Cecilia is no stranger to the struggles of women in the sporting arena, particularly the trying conditions of a paddle race. In her lengthy career, Cecilia competed in both the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games as well as the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games. Entering in the only category available to women which were the 500 metre kayak race - she finished sixth and fourth respectively.

After a short retirement to “educate the children”, Cecilia picked up kayaking again in 1975. By 1977, she was crowned the Australian Women’s Champion, in both the single and double 500 metres and 1000 metres.

Even at the age of 72, Cecilia cannot leave the water. She is ready to again paddle the 404 kilometre five day journey that is the Red Cross Murray Marathon. This time though, the main incentive is to assist a worthy cause.

'Kayaking has always been a big part of my life. It was tough, but I loved it. I felt strange away from the water!' said Cecilia. 'Now the main reason I paddle is to contribute to the Australian Red Cross'.

As well as the feel good factor of raising funds for the Red Cross, the social experience of kayaking with friends and family, and meeting many people from all over the world also encourages Mrs. Burke to continue to paddle.

'Over the years I’ve introduced 17 people to the Murray Marathon – if I pulled out now, they’d kill me!' said Cecilia.

Together, Cecilia and her team called the Blue Belles have organised raffles, breakfasts, cinema nights and supper evenings to raise money for the Australian Red Cross.

According to John Powell, Group Manager of Fundraising at the Red Cross in Victoria, it is hoped that over $200,000 will be raised at the Herald Sun Murray Marathon to support local Red Cross activities.

The Murray Marathon begins on December 27 in Yarrawonga. It is a 404 kilometre paddling event, finishing in Swan Hill just in time for the New Years Eve celebrations.
