Mother of three-year-old twins Bobi Kaponay certainly is, training hard for the 404 kilometre Herald Sun Red Cross Murray Marathon in December.
The Wantirna South resident is entering her second marathon, after a great experience in 2003. Her highlight for the event was crossing the finish line hand-in-hand with her husband.
'It was the first time we’d done this together. It tested our ability to work under pressure as a team. We’re still married, so it must’ve gone okay!' said Bobi.
Bobi has previously been the European Junior Speed Skating Champion, and is also a registered nurse. What is most admirable though is the fact that she can balance her training commitments with her three year old twins.
'It’s tough, but the feeling you get contributing to the Red Cross and your own personal satisfaction of finishing makes it worth it in the end!' said Bobi.
According to John Powell, Group Manager of Fundraising at the Red Cross in Victoria, it is hoped that over $200,000 will be raised to support local Red Cross activities.
'Disaster and emergency relief and first aid training would not be possible without the support of volunteers and fundraisers. They are imperative to the operations of the Red Cross' said John.
Over 700 participants have been training for months to attempt the longest flat-water canoe race in the world. Stretching 404 kilometres along the beautiful Murray River, the race begins in Yarrawonga on December 27, and ends in Swan Hill on New Years Eve.
But if you’re not up for the 404 kilometre paddle, the Red Cross has provided other ways to be involved. 400 volunteers and up to 3000 support crew from town to town assist this major fundraiser for the Australian Red Cross. Individuals form teams such as Camp and Traffic Management, Health Support, Race Groups, Land Patrol, Water Patrol and Communications.
