VOLUNTEER POSITION PROFILE
POSITION TITLE: Ballarat Health Services Base.Hospital Emergency Department Volunteer

LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT: Ongoing
DAYS WORKING: As rostered
TIMES: 3 hour shifts
POSITION CONTEXT: Assistance and Care in the Emergency Department (ACE) is a Red Cross program aimed at meeting the personal and practical support needs of patients and their attending family / friends in the Emergency Department of the Hospital. Red Cross volunteers help to ease the anxiety experienced by offering companionship, a conversation, a break from caring for children and assistance with the location of hospital facilities. The ACE Volunteer works in partnership with Hospital staff and abides by the Hospital policies and practices, avoiding any involvement in counselling, medical procedures, or advice about such matters. Part of the aim of the Program is to allow hospital staff to focus on their core work.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE: * Guide and orientate patients to Emergency Department * Provide emotional support during the waiting period and if requested during treatment * Converse with people visiting the department helping to pass the time * Care for children allowing parents to focus on patient * Liaise between patients and staff when requested, communicating non-medical information e.g.: request for blanket / drink * Provide refreshments to family and friends * Offer comfort to family member or friend of a patient receiving medical attention * Provide resources to occupy patients in the waiting room e.g.: books, magazines * Work cooperatively with Emergency Department staff to ensure that the needs of patients and attending family/carers are being met
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: * Interest in providing a humanitarian service, and ability to work within the Fundamental Principles of Red Cross * Outgoing personality and willingness to approach and converse with people * Ability to work within operational policies & procedures, and maintain confidentiality * Ability to work as part of a team and independently * Strong communication skills * Calm manner * Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds * Be physically able to fulfil the role e.g.: fit enough to stand up during four hour shift * Satisfactory results from a Police Records Check, and referee checks * Acceptance of a three month probationary period * Successfully complete all training and induction.
