Red Cross Kids Day Out
Over 320 students from remote areas of Gippsland will take part in a 'Red Cross Kids Day Out' around Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale and Painesville townships this Wednesday, 19 March 2003, as part of Australian Red Cross efforts to assist the local community recover from the recent bushfires.

The 220 primary and 100 secondary-aged students, some of whom will have travelled nearly 200km from areas such as Tubbut, Goonergarah, Dargo, Gelantipy, Buchan, Benamura, Swifts Creek and Omeo to participate in the day, will enjoy a number of activities including a boat trip around Paynesville Lake, a picnic lunch, ten pin bowling, a visit to the local archery park and a feature film thanks to the organisational efforts of Australian Red Cross and generosity of local businesses.

"I believe activities such as 'Red Cross Kids Day Out' will play an important role in the community recovery process in Gippsland," said Red Cross volunteer organiser Brenda Murray.

"There is more to it than merely cleaning up and repairing fences - we need to take the time to look at the human aspect.  These kids made their own particular sacrifices during the fires, many of the older ones helping defend their homes, while the little ones were sent away.  Red Cross Kids Day Out is our way of helping them heal and move on."

'Red Cross Kids Day Out' is made possible through Australian Red Cross fundraisers such as the current March is Red Cross Calling appeal, which this year hopes to raise $2.4 million dollars needed to support essential Australian Red Cross, Victoria community programs and emergency services, such as the Emergency First Aid, Emergency Registration and Emergency Catering provided during the recent bushfires.
