POSITION TITLE:                    yconnect? Homework Club Tutor

LOCATION:                            West Richmond, Fitzroy and
                                            Abbotsford Primary Schools

DEPARTMENT:                         Volunteer Development

POSITION REPORTS TO:          yconnect? Homework Club Convenor

LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT:         Ongoing

DAYS AND TIMES:                    Approx 1.5 hours at school
                                             per week (Mon, Tue or Wed)

Position context:

The Red Cross yconnect? group (aimed at volunteers aged between 18-35 years) is an innovative unit solely run by young and dynamic volunteers. yconnect? have developed projects to provide valuable and worthwhile positive volunteer experiences for the young people in our community. The programs offer a variety of benefits to those involved, which gives back to the community in which they live.

The Homework Club Program is essentially a support group for primary aged children, often from non-English speaking backgrounds. We offer a one-hour after school session every week. The primary aim of this program is to facilitate an environment which allows children to receive help with homework projects and further the child's academic progress while providing positive role models and social interaction for participants.

Position summary

The yconnect? Homework Club Tutor is responsible for providing homework support and friendship to primary school aged children. This position is aimed at supplementing the role teachers and parents play in supporting children’s learning and development needs

Principal responsibilities of the role:

  • work cooperatively with the  Convenor and other volunteers in the program
  • work with the school to ensure that the needs of the clients are being met
  • support the learning needs of children involved in the program principally by assisting them with their weekly homework

Specific requirements:

  • interest in providing a humanitarian service, and ability to work within the Fundamental principles of Red Cross
  • understanding of the Red Cross vision and mission to support vulnerable people
  • ability to work within operational policies & procedures, and maintain confidentiality
  • ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • ability to communicate effectively
  • ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • willingness to attend training related to this role and Red Cross
  • satisfactory results from a Police Records Check, and reference checks
