The March is Red Cross Calling appeal looks set to again meet target for the Red Cross this year, with early totals indicating the $2.4 million state target is within reach, thanks to the generosity and support of people living across Victoria.
"Even though final figures won't be known until the end of June, monies received to date are matching levels received at the same time during past appeals," Australian Red Cross, Victoria Fundraising Manager Mr John Powell said.
"It is through such appeals the Australian Red Cross is able to fund a range of vital local services that assist community members in need," he said.
Funds raised by the Red Cross Calling appeal are directed to services the Australian Red Cross delivers on a local level including:
* Telecross - a telephone service designed to provide regular personal contact and reassurance to isolated and elderly members of the community
* Emergency First Aid - fully trained volunteer first aid officers provide immediate assistance to people affected by emergencies, such as the recent bushfires
* Volunteer transport - a transport service designed to link people to essential medical appointments
* Single Incident Emergency Assistance - a program that provides immediate assistance to families affected by small-scale emergencies such as house fire or a burst water main
* Youth programs - a series of programs designed to support the leadership and development of young people in their own community
* Emergency catering - a program that provides emergency services agencies in the field with meals and refreshments
"I wish to acknowledge and thank all Victorians for their generosity and involvement in the 2003 Red Cross Calling appeal," said Mr Powell.
