VOLUNTEER POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position title:                Talk Out Loud - Volunteer Peer Educator

Department:                Community Programs

Position Location:         Various

Position Reports to:      save-a-mate Program Worker/
                                  Talk Out Loud Program Convenor

Hours of Work:             6-12 hours per month (i.e. 1-2 sessions
                                  of 6 hours)

Organisational Information:
The Australian Red Cross Victoria (ARCV) provides a number of Community Services which are in line with its principles, goals & Mission Statements, and complement their role in caring for people in crisis.

In delivering the Talk Out Loud Program the ARCV will demonstrate the highest standards of integrity and quality.

Program and Position Summary:
The Talk Out Loud course is an interactive, educational program that aims to address the mental health issues impacting young people by raising mental health literacy, reducing stigma and encouraging helpseeking.

Talk Out Loud provides training, education and health promotion initiatives that seek to build the skills and knowledge of young people to look after themselves and provide support to their peers.  Talk Out Loud operates under a continuous improvement philosophy, based on participant’s feedback, emerging research and flexible service delivery allowing activities to remain relevant to the target audience.

Significant Responsibility:
To work cooperatively with the Program Convenor, Program Officer and the Course Organisers, in the provision of the Talk Out Loud course.
Volunteers will be asked to formalise their commitment to the Talk Out Loud Program by signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

Tasks:
- To deliver the Talk Out Loud Sessions at Secondary Schools, Youth Centres and Community Centres.  Note: volunteers will work in teams of two.
  Tasks include:
   - Deliver approved Talk Out Loud Course.
 - Ensure all Course participants are registered.
 - Work on program activities with small groups of Course participants.
- Work according to ARC program policies and operational procedures.
- Work cooperatively with the Program Officer, the Program Convenor and Course Organisers to ensure the venue is ready and equipped with course requirements.
- Encourage communication with the participants during the sessions; listen and share.
- Maintain service records and return to Convenor or Project Officer as required.
- Participate in regular performance discussions/program monitoring & evaluation with the Convenor or the Program Officer.
- Participate in any training sessions and meetings. Attend a minimum of 4 out of 6 annual sessions/meetings.
- Report any accident or injury to yourself or the participants, or risk of such, to the Convenor and Course organisers.

Skills and Experience

Essential
- Interest in providing a humanitarian service and ability to work within the fundamental principles of Red Cross.
- Ability to work within operational policies & procedures, and maintain confidentiality.
- Experience in working with young people.
- Non-judgemental.
- Ability to communicate with a broad range of people and listen effectively.
- Satisfactory results from a Police Records Check, Working with Children Check and reference checks.
- Current Victorian Driver’s Licence.

Desirable
- Level 2/Intermediate First Aid.
- An understanding of the health and social issues impacting young people, in particular mental health issues.
- Mental Health First Aid and/or Youth Mental Health First Aid.
